Patient became able to walk without crutch after two weeks and felt five years younger after 9 months of treatment

Heart disease / Hypertension , Diabetes / Gout / Rheumatoid Arthritis , Medical Case

One of my patients introduced his mother to me while he was being treated by me. His mother came to Hong Kong all the way from Canada to visit me for treatment in 2009 when she was 74 years old. She brought me her recent medical report, showing high fasting blood glucose level, which required insulin therapy. Her triglyceride, uric acid and urea were also too high, and her heart was enlarged. Her kidney function was poor, only half of that of normal people, and there was a small cyst in her right kidney. Her feet were numb and she had difficulty walking. There were deposits in her gallbladder, but not gallstones. Her liver was completely normal.

The patient came using a crutch. Her complexion was dark and dull without lust, her eyes were lifeless with tears seeping out of her left eye, her skin was wrinkled, and her face was swollen. She had been taking antihypertensive drugs for more than 30 years. About 20 years ago, she had pain in her coccyx, affecting her sciatic nerve which sometimes felt tight. It was difficult to fall asleep at night, and even if she could fall asleep, she could not sleep tight.

Taking antihypertensive drugs for a long time had caused many sequelae. Her lower back, knees, heels and calves were painful and weak, mainly because her heartbeat had to be slowed down to lower her blood pressure, causing insufficient blood supply to her brain. Her cranial nerves deteriorated and could only send out weak pulse signals, resulting in pain and weaknesses in her joints and muscles. The enlargement of her heart was mainly caused by the accumulation of blood stasis and necrotic cells in her myocardium that could not be discharged. Her enlarged heart was weak, which could not supply sufficient blood to her brain, resulting in sleep difficulty. As for her lower back pain, it was also related to her cerebral ischemia. Being very confident in curing her, I promised that her lower back pain would heal or recover by at least 80% within three weeks.

Lower back could be straightened with pain relieved

After taking medicine, patient didn’t feel her body heat up until the second day. Her body became hot and felt a lot more relaxed. Her lower back pain was significantly improved. A week later, it was 50% better and she could straighten her back without pain when she walked, unlike the first time I saw her when she could only walk with the support of a crutch and her back bent. At the first follow-up visit (six days later), she said that the numbness in her feet had subsided by about 80%, with the restoration of senses. Her eyesight had also improved slightly and she could see things more clearly. In the past, her vision was like covered by a layer of smoke which couldn’t be wiped away, but now the smoke had all disappeared and her vision had become clear. This was related to stagnant blood in her liver. As the liver condition relates to vision, stagnant blood in the liver would not only affect her to become temperamental, but also cause visual deterioration. Her glucose level remained high, reaching 11.2. I told her that while taking Chinese medicine, which contained sugar, the level would hover at around 12, which was normal and there was no need to worry. In addition, she slept slightly better than before, but she still woke up in the middle of the night and could not sleep soundly. The urine samples brought in this time were purple-red, dark orange, orange-brown, yellow-brown and others, indicating the discharge of accumulated stasis from her heart, liver and brain. After the accumulated blood stasis was discharged, the functions of her major organs would improve. In particular, after her heart was strengthened, more blood would be supplied to her brain and the quality of sleep would improve. Sufficient blood would also nourish her brain cells, which would increase endocrine and enhance all body functions.

Another week later, the patient’s lower back pain was 90% relieved and she could straighten her back every time she stood up and walked. At the second follow-up visit (twelve days later), the patient’s complexion improved with a pinkish tinge and her blood pressure was normal. She happily said that the numbness in her feet had mostly subsided, with only a little remaining in her toes and soles, which didn’t affect her walking. There was still a lot of eye secretion. I explained that it indicated the excretion of toxins from her brain. She also said that her sleep had further improved. There was one night that she could sleep very soundly until dawn, while other nights were not bad. There was one night that she woke up several times, but she could fall asleep again.

The patient’s lower back pain and numbness were better than expected. At the beginning, I promised that the pain could be relieved by more than 80% within three weeks, but now it only took 14 days, which was really out of my expectation. At the third follow-up visit (after 18 days), the patient was energetic and cheerful. She did not need to use a crutch anymore. She pointed out she forgot to tell me that when she raised her left arm, she felt a painful tension, but the condition had gotten much better now. When I took her pulse, her palms were warm. Her glucose level reached 12.4. Since the Chinese medicine I prescribed contained sugar, diabetic patients’ glucose level would not drop immediately after drinking the medicine in general. Although the patient said her vision became clearer than before, the condition regressed sometimes and things she saw were like covered by a film of smoke. Eye secretion continued to be discharged. The patient said that every day she sweated a little, and the slight numbness was only felt in her toes. A small amount of cholesterol deposits began to be found in the urine she brought in this time.

Smoke-like film faded, vision became clear

At the fourth follow-up visit, which was one month after taking medicine, the patient had no more lower back pain and she could walk normally. The numbness was only found in her right toes. Her complexion was fair, with significantly less wrinkles. Her eyes were filled with energy, with eye secretion reduced and becoming thinner and less sticky. Her vision was bright and clear, without the smoke-like film. When she measured her blood pressure at home, everything was normal. This time when it was measured at the clinic, her heartbeat was even but her pulse was still very weak. She said that she could not raise her left arm up above her head, but it had now improved, though it still hurt when raised at a certain angle. Among the urine samples she brought in, one bottle was yellow-green, indicating bile leakage, probably caused by the obstruction of her bile duct.

Nearly two months had passed since the start of the treatment and her conditions had a breakthrough. She often smiled in a cheerful mood, the result of discharging accumulated stasis from her brain. Since she had just started to walk normally, I suggested her doing more exercises to build muscles and speed up recovery. At the fifth follow-up visit, she told me her self-measured blood pressure and heartbeat were normal during the past week, and her blood glucose levels were between 12.1 and 15.7, which were within the acceptable range. There was no pain in her lower back, which seemed to have recovered. She had a deep pulse, indicating her heart was as weak as before. The urine samples she brought in were mostly orange-brown, one bottle was dark maroon, one was light blackish green and five were yellow-brown, indicating accumulated blood stasis discharged from her heart and brain as well as toxins discharged from her liver.

Since I was going back to the United States to visit my relatives, I prescribed two weeks of medicine for her to drink. Fourteen days later, she came back for the sixth follow-up visit. I asked her if she had exercised and she replied not much, so she did not sweat much. There was nothing I could do because exercise could not be forced but up to her will. At the visit, her eyes were particularly big, bright and energetic, no longer stuck with eye secretion, which made them difficult to open. The eye secretion had become thinner and thinner during the past two weeks. I believed her brain toxins could be all cleared very soon.

I asked her about her right arm. She said although she could raise it a little more easily, it still felt very tight, but the pain was a lot less. It was still difficult to turn her arm behind her back, with no significant improvement. Her hands and feet were warm, and her right toes were still slightly numb, yet to be improved. The urine samples brought in were purple-red, orange-brown, light blackish green, light orange-brown, and light yellow-brown, with no cholesterol precipitates, indicating that her liver was still bringing out stagnant blood and her heart and brain were still discharging stasis.

Complexion worsened with relief patch

Afterwards, the patient travelled abroad. The beds she slept on were soft and her legs felt some tension again. She seldom talked about this symptom before. After returning to Hong Kong, sleeping on her own bed that was firmer, her lower back seemed better and was able to be straightened when she woke up in the morning. The pain from the tug in her toes had also greatly reduced, while the numbness had gradually subsided. I believed the pain that suddenly appeared at the time of her trip was related to the firmness of her bed, which directly affected her spine.

At the 10th follow-up visit, the patient’s blood glucose level dropped to only 6.4. Due to this improvement, her eyesight was even clearer. There was still eye secretion sometimes, but it only happened occasionally. At this point of time, the patient’s health remained stable with all aspects being in good conditions. When she returned to Canada to visit her relatives, she even played billiards and became exceptionally strong for her old age.

At the fifteenth follow-up visit, the patient’s condition had completely changed and her complexion became dull and dark. When asked why, she said she slept poorly due to the cold weather, but I didn’t think so. How could poor sleep cause such changes. I asked her in more detail and she finally told me her chest had been very painful recently so she put a pain relief patch on it. I said painkillers would hurt her heart and slow down its beating, which would lead to insufficient blood supply to her brain, so her complexion became dull due to a lack of blood. Meanwhile, the patient might have practised Eight Brocades Exercise too excessively last week, which had overloaded her heart and made it weak.

This pain relief patch was made in Japan. Without an English name, I could not find its medical ingredients. At the seventeenth follow-up visit, the patient’s complexion improved with radiance, and pulse could be felt on her right hand. After she applied the patch, I couldn’t feel the pulse on her right hand and at the last follow-up consultation, I could barely take the pulse. This time, her pulse had become strong. At the nineteenth follow-up visit, the pulse on her right hand was close to that on her left hand, resulting from her strengthened heart.

Due to a sandstorm in China, the air in Hong Kong was particularly poor. At the 23rd follow-up visit, the patient’s complexion and energy level were not as good as the previous week, partly due to her weak heart. In addition, she did not sleep well for one or two nights, so her complexion became dark. A few days later, it was the Ching Ming Festival. She felt her chest tight and especially dull. I suggested taking ginseng tea to strengthen her heart and she agreed to try it.

After drinking ginseng tea, her whole body instantly became hot, her heart was obviously strengthened. Her motivation became strong that she wanted to do more things. She was agile and brisk when she walked. At the 28th follow-up visit, her blood glucose level remained stable at 7.3. The numbness in her toes rarely occurred. Her sleep improved and her defecation was normal. Based on her condition, she was close to a complete recovery. At the thirty-seventh follow-up visit, I asked her how many years younger she felt her condition was. After thinking for a while, she said five years.

Soon, the patient stopped taking medicine. Her lower back did not feel pain anymore, her blood glucose level remained stable, and she walked like a normal person with all the numbness and sciatica eliminated. The patient was first diagnosed on 10 October 2009 and the treatment ended on 26 June 2010. She returned to Canada to visit her relatives in the middle. She was treated for nine months, with a total of 37 visits.
